What is shot blasting?

Shot blasting is a mechanical surface preparation method that propels steel shot against concrete to create texture and remove loose material before epoxy coating application.

Shot blasting involves a pneumatic or electric machine that launches steel balls (shot) at high velocity onto concrete surfaces. The steel projectiles strike the concrete, breaking apart weak surface layers, laitance, and any existing coatings while creating a textured profile. This profile gives epoxy coatings mechanical grip, improving adhesion and durability.

The process works best on concrete with moderate surface damage, contamination, or previous coating residue. Different shot sizes and blasting intensities produce varying profile depths, typically ranging from light to aggressive texture. Shot blasting leaves concrete reasonably clean and dust-free compared to other abrasive methods, though some dust containment is still necessary.

Shot blasting differs from concrete grinding in speed and final surface character. Grinding uses rotating diamond or carbide discs and produces a smoother finish, working well for light cleaning or decorative prep. Shot blasting is faster at removing thick coatings and creates a more pronounced mechanical profile ideal for high-adhesion epoxy bond. Ontario flooring contractors often choose shot blasting for garage floors, warehouse slabs, and industrial spaces where strong coating performance is critical. You can find epoxy flooring providers in your area who regularly use this preparation method.
