What is hot tire pickup?

Hot tire pickup is the phenomenon where tire rubber heated by friction transfers to or pulls away from soft epoxy garage coatings when a vehicle parks or moves over the surface.

When a vehicle's tires heat up from driving, they can transfer rubber residue or even lift material from freshly applied or inherently soft epoxy coatings. This occurs because warm rubber becomes tacky and bonds temporarily to a coating surface that is either still curing, not fully hardened, or formulated with softer resin chemistry. The result ranges from visible tire marks and discoloration to actual coating delamination where the rubber physically pulls up particles or thin layers of the floor finish.

Hot tire pickup matters in garage flooring because it directly affects durability and appearance. A floor that shows marks every time a car parks may require frequent cleaning or touch-ups, and repeated lifting can accelerate wear. When selecting an epoxy coating for a garage space with regular vehicle traffic, the hardness and cure profile of the product become critical factors. Harder, faster-curing epoxy formulations and two-part systems that reach full chemical hardness quickly are less prone to this issue than softer, single-stage products that remain somewhat tacky longer after application.
