What is an epoxy primer?
An epoxy primer is a sealing coat applied directly to concrete that penetrates the surface, fills pores, and creates a bonding layer for subsequent epoxy floor coats.
An epoxy primer is the first coat in a floor system, applied directly to bare concrete. It works by flowing into the porous structure of the concrete substrate, filling micro-voids and capillaries that would otherwise trap air and moisture beneath the final epoxy finish.
The primary function of the primer is to establish a mechanical and chemical bond between the concrete and the epoxy topcoats that follow. Concrete is naturally absorbent, and without a primer, moisture and off-gassing can create adhesion failures, bubbling, or delamination over time. The primer acts as a moisture barrier and ensures the topcoat resin cures properly and adheres uniformly across the floor.
Epoxy primers differ from epoxy topcoats in their formulation. They are typically more fluid and lower in viscosity to achieve deep penetration into the concrete matrix. Some primers are pigmented for coverage visibility during application, while others are clear. A well-applied primer seals the floor against dust, moisture, and chemical seepage, making it especially important in Ontario basements, garages, and commercial spaces where concrete can absorb water and contaminants.
For any concrete floor that will receive an epoxy coating, the primer step is not optional. Epoxy flooring professionals always begin with a primer to ensure the system's durability and performance. Skipping or thinly applying the primer is a common cause of premature coating failure.
