What is diamond grinding?

Diamond grinding is the mechanical abrasion of concrete using metal-bond or resin-bond diamond tooling to prepare surfaces or refine finishes.

Diamond grinding relies on diamond particles embedded in metal or resin bonds to remove the top layer of concrete. Grinding equipment, typically floor grinders or multi-headed machines, applies these diamond tooling segments to the concrete surface under pressure, creating a smooth, uniform profile.

In epoxy flooring work, diamond grinding serves two main purposes. First, it prepares raw concrete for coating application by opening the surface pores, removing sealers, and flattening imperfections so epoxy adheres properly. Second, it can polish existing concrete or freshly applied epoxy coatings to achieve a desired gloss level and finish.

The grit progression matters: coarser diamonds (lower numbers) cut faster and remove thicker material, while finer grits (higher numbers) produce a smoother surface. Metal-bond diamonds work well on hard concrete and previous coatings, while resin-bond diamonds are gentler and often used for finishing stages. The process also generates concrete dust, requiring proper containment and HEPA filtration on jobsites.

For Ontario flooring contractors, diamond grinding is the foundation step. Without proper surface prep and profile, epoxy coatings will not cure evenly or bond reliably. Skilled operators control grit sequences and machine speed to avoid over-grinding or leaving a profile too coarse for the specified topcoat.
