What is surface profile (CSP)?
Surface profile (CSP) is a standardized ICRI measurement scale (1 through 9) that defines the concrete roughness and texture depth required for proper epoxy or coating adhesion.
Concrete Surface Profile (CSP) is a 1-to-9 chip scale developed by the International Concrete Repair Institute to measure the physical texture and roughness of a concrete substrate before coating application. Each CSP level represents a specific degree of surface preparation, from CSP 1 (no texture, unground) through CSP 9 (maximum aggregate exposure with deep pitting).
The CSP rating determines how well epoxy, polyurethane, or other coatings will bond to the concrete surface. A concrete floor prepared to CSP 3 (light texture with some aggregate visibility) or CSP 4 (medium texture with consistent aggregate exposure) typically provides the anchor profile needed for residential and light commercial epoxy applications. Industrial or high-traffic environments often require CSP 5 or higher to ensure durability and adhesion under demanding conditions.
Contractors assess CSP using standard concrete profile chips that are physically matched to the substrate. The profile is typically created through grinding, shot blasting, or acid etching. Specifying the correct CSP is essential because under-prepared surfaces lead to coating failure, delamination, and reduced floor lifespan. Conversely, over-preparation can unnecessarily increase labor and material costs.
